Transfusion Medicine - Pathology & Laboratory Medicine

NSHA Central Zone maintains a Transfusion Medicine service to provide blood components and/or products for routine and emergency transfusion of inpatients and outpatients. The core Transfusion Medicine service  is located in the Halifax Infirmary (HI) building of the QEII Health Sciences Centre.

Four pre-compatibility testing sites:

  • Halifax Infirmary
  • Victoria General (VG)
  • Dartmouth General Hospital (DGH)
  • Hants Community Hospital (HCH)

Three transfusion sites:

  • Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital (TOMH)
  • Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital (ESMH)
  • Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital (MVMH)

Only the core Halifax Infirmary; Transfusion Medicine service performs complex antibody investigation services which are provided from the Halifax Infirmary to all other NSHA Central Zone sites as well.

The Transfusion Medicine service originally located at the Victoria General, was the first Canadian hospital blood transfusion service to be accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB). Initially received May 2, 1994 and on November 2005, all NSHA Central Zone Transfusion Medicine services achieved the American Association of Blood Banks accreditation.

The QE II Apheresis Services provides therapeutic hemapheresis services. The Apheresis Service is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and is located in the Victoria General building.
