Pathology Informatics

The Pathology Informatics group is responsible for building, maintaining and trouble-shooting the Laboratory Information System (LIS); implementing new functionality and modifying the system to deal with changing laboratory work processes. Cerner Millennium Laboratory Solutions General Laboratory, Anatomical Pathology, Blood Transfusion and Microbiology have been implemented at all clinical laboratories within Capital Health. The LIS is also used for non-clinical laboratories in Capital Health including the Environmental Services Laboratory.

Other features/solutions implemented on LIS:

  • Foreign System Interfaces - The Cerner Millennium LIS communicates with numerous Capital Health and provincial systems by sending and/or receiving messages such as:
    • 'Admit, discharge, transfer' (ADT) feeds from patient registration system
    • Laboratory and radiology orders and/or results
    • Billing information

It's been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Millennium Interfaces presents a comprehensive view of the relationship between Millennium and the foreign systems it communicates with.

  • Auto verification - system verification of laboratory tests that meet established criteria
  • Discern Expert (System Rules) - automate laboratory processes using system rules
  • Discern Explorer (Cerner’s custom programming language) - generation of reports to provide statistical, productivity and research data
  • Medical Device Interfaces - interface automated instruments to the LIS
  • Remote reporting - ability to deliver reports to remote printers and fax machines in physicians' offices.
