Accreditation Volunteer Opportunity FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Accreditation?

It is a process of evaluating health care organizations against defined standards. Accreditation can identify what is done well and what needs to be improved. Accreditation is a four-year cycle, concluding with an on-site visit. The next on-site visit will be in fall 2021.

Why do you want patients to join the committee?

Patients have a valuable voice we can learn from a lived experience perspective.

What is the time commitment?

The term on this committee is 3-years.

Meeting frequency will vary. During 2019-2020, they will be less frequent but as the site visit gets closer, (2020-2021) expect monthly 2-hour meetings in Halifax, or through distance technology, during regular business hours. You may be asked to review documents and provide feedback in between meetings.

What skills do I need to participate?

The patient voice and story will help us understand which of the cancer care standards we are meeting and what needs to be improved.

If you have:

  • A personal experience with the cancer system
  • An ability to thinking beyond your individual experience
  • The willingness to collaborate in a group setting
  • Willingness  to comply with Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) Volunteer Orientation guidelines:
    • sign a confidentiality pledge
    • submit an up to date criminal record check (NSHA will reimburse cost)
    • attend an orientation session

Our commitment to you

  • We are committed to involving and supporting patients, families and friend caregivers in system improvement opportunities.
  • Regular and ongoing support from the committee chair and Engagement Lead
  • We are seeking a diverse representation from across Nova Scotia.

It is important to note that participating (or choosing not to participate) will not affect your current or future health care in any way.
