Geriatric Assessment/Progressive Care/Family Medicine Unit

The Geriatric Assessment Unit (GAU) is a 12-bed unit located on the ninth floor of the Abbie J. Lane Building. The focus of this unit is the assessment and treatment of the frail older adult. The unit provides interdisciplinary assessment and treatment for those frail older adults with complex, interacting medical and social issues. The goal of this service is to help individuals reach their optimal health so that they can continue to live in the community. The Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is a 10-bed unit located on the ninth floor of the Abbie J. Lane Building. The purpose of this multi-disciplinary unit, similar to GAU, is to assist functionally impaired older adults to achieve maximum independence, to continue living in the community and to avoid readmissions to hospital. Patients are usually transferred to the unit from medicine, general surgery and cardiology. For more information contact rectherapystudents@nshealth.ca

Geriatric Restorative Care

Geriatric Restorative Care (GRC) is a 27-bed unit located on the third floor, east wing of the Capital Health Veterans’ Memorial Building. The purpose of this interdisciplinary unit is to assist functionally impaired older adults to achieve maximum independence, to continue living in the community and to avoid readmissions to hospital. Patients are usually transferred from orthopaedics, cardiovascular surgery and neurology. For more information contact rectherapystudents@nshealth.ca

Stroke and Neurology

Recreation Therapy provides service to Stroke and Neurology. The focus is to provide an opportunity for patients to engage in daily leisure activities that support recovery and provide daily structure and routine. Patients may transition to their homes, physical rehabilitation, home hospital or another supervised program, such as Transitional Care, Progressive Care, and Restorative Care. For more information contact rectherapystudents@nshealth.ca

Mental Health

The Mental Health program provides services to people living with or experiencing mental health issues and illnesses. Recreation Therapy provides comprehensive service in a variety of settings including Inpatient Psychiatric Care, Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Forensics and the community. For more information contact rectherapystudents@nshealth.ca

Neurosurgery

The Neurosurgery Unit is a 28-bed unit in the Halifax Infirmary with care designated specifically for individuals with unique needs related to brain and/or spinal cord injuries and diseases. Patients vary in age and stage of recovery making an individualized team-approach to care vital within the unit. Patients may transition to their homes, physical rehabilitation, home hospital, or another supervised environment. For more information contact rectherapystudents@nshealth.ca

Physical Rehabilitation

Physical Rehabilitation includes three inpatient units located at the Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre. This program focuses on individuals with conditions such as traumatic brain injury, neuromuscular disorders, spinal cord injuries, stroke, amputation, and musculoskeletal trauma. Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Ambulatory Care

ABI Ambulatory Care includes Outreach and Day Program.  The Day Program is a provincial service, where as Outreach works within the community of Halifax Regional Municipality.  These two collaborative programs serve adults living with Acquired Brain Injury.  ABI is defined as damage to the brain which occurs after birth.  It does not include diseases that get worse over time.  Some causes of ABI include motor vehicle accident, falls, assault, and stroke. For more information contact rectherapystudents@nshealth.ca

Community Transitional Unit - Victoria General Hospital Site

Transitional Care at the Victoria General Hospital Site is an Alternate Level of Care (ALC) unit focusing on individuals that are medically stable, but require some rehabilitation and are awaiting placement in extended care settings or supportive housing environments. The patients are primarily seniors, but the unit can also include younger individuals with physical disabilities, brain injuries, and other conditions that require extended care. The primary destinations following discharge are extended care facilities and supportive housing environments. For more information contact rectherapystudents@nshealth.ca

Veterans’ Services (Long-Term Care)

This is a 175-bed residential facility for Veterans of WWII and the Korean War. This facility includes two special care units: 50 beds oriented to individuals with a diagnosis of dementia and 25 beds oriented to behaviourally-challenged individuals (psychogeriatrics). The remaining 100 beds are for Veterans with various cognitive and physical disabilities. For more information contact rectherapystudents@nshealth.ca
