Nutrition in the School Community

What is a school community?

This section of the Public Health Nutrition website is dedicated to everyone in the school community-teachers, staff, administrators, parents and guardians. The goal is to support the school community to improve food literacy and the health of the youth in our province.

The Conference Board of Canada defines food literacy as “an individual’s food-related knowledge, attitudes and skills” An individual’s food literacy levels will influence their food-related decisions, which ultimately impact their diet and health as well as the environment.

Healthy eating habits in childhood and adolescence provide energy and nutrients needed for:

  • Concentration and learning
  • Playing
  • Normal growth and development
  • Dental health

Healthy eating patterns developed during childhood can help prevent some chronic health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and certain types of cancer. Healthy foods are those that are found in the four main food groups of Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide.

The four food groups are:

  • Vegetables and Fruit
  • Grain Products
  • Milk and Alternatives
  • Meat and Alternatives

When you send food to school with your child - whether it is for lunch or snacks - aim to include food choices from Canada's Food Guide.
