Registered Nurses Professional Development Centre

RN-PDC was established in April 2003 as the result of a strategic assessment and repositioning of the former Post RN Specialty Education Program unit. RN-PDC is in the business of specialty certification for registered nurses and has recently taken a lead role in the development and implementation of interprofessional programs. RN-PDC developed and now offers three interprofessional programs: Orientation to the Canadian Health Care System for the Internationally Educated Health Care Professional; Suicide Risk Assessment and Intervention Program, and Psychosocial Rehabilitation Interprofessionals Program.

RN-PDC’s intent is to provide a strategic long term regional approach that is grounded in and consistent with the missions of the Nova Scotia Department of Health (DOH) and the District Health Authorities (DHA). RN-PDC is provincially funded and broadly supported by registered nurses and other healthcare professions in the region. RN-PDC is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with its offices and classrooms being hosted within the Capital District Health Authority. Current staffing numbers include a Director (Masters prepared), 12 Nurse Educators (Masters prepared), six Nursing Instructors (Baccalaureate prepared), and six Administrative Support Staff.

Program evaluation has been integral to all RN-PDC programs and services, including several program and project proposals. RN-PDC is developing a centre evaluation plan using the Logic Model. Various faculty have undertaken project management and program evaluation programs; been certified in e-learning as tutors, developers and managers; and/or completed a certificate course in Interprofessional Education.

Faculty members have been supported in engaging in outside contract work related to program reviews and evaluations as a way to develop internal expertise. These activities have provided faculty with experience in project management, needs assessment, survey development, data analysis and report writing.
