Infants - Public Health

Once your baby is six months old, you can begin looking for signs that she’s ready to try solid food. These include:

  • Holding her head up
  • Sitting up in a high chair
  • Showing when she wants food by opening mouth wide when you offer food on a spoon
  • Keeping food in her mouth and swallowing it instead of pushing it out
  • Showing when she doesn’t want food by turning away, keeping her mouth closed, or pushing the food away

When your baby can do all of these things, she’s ready to start solid foods.
