Accreditation - Performance Excellence

In April 2015, the former Capital District Health Authority (CDHA), became the Central Zone within the newly amalgamated Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA). Under this new structure, nine former district health authorities have been consolidated into one unified provincial authority. The new structure will build on the strength of local leadership teams in four zones: Western, Eastern, Northern and Central.

One of the ways Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) actively seeks to improve on the quality of care we provide is through Accreditation Canada Qmentum program. Accreditation Canada is a not-for-profit, independent organization that visits health care facilities every three years currently to validate the quality work being done. By participating in Accreditation Canada’s program, we are evaluating our performance against national and international standards of excellence.

The Accreditation process has been a driving force in our commitment to delivering high quality and safe patient care, as a review like this and input from expert surveyors is useful as a means of both recognizing what we are doing well and identifying where improvements are needed.

Accreditation 2014

In April 2014, the former CDHA received the highest rating from Accreditation Canada - Accredited with Exemplary Standing. Accreditation with Exemplary Standing is granted to those organizations which exceed the most rigorous requirements of the accreditation program so this is a significant accomplishment. This rating was based on a week-long survey of the former CDHA in October 2013 as well as evidence we submitted to Accreditation Canada up to the end of March 2014.

Accreditation Canada congratulated "leadership, staff, and accreditation team members for their efforts and dedication to the provision of safe, quality health services."

The former CDHA received a very positive preliminary report from Accreditation Canada on Nov. 1, 2013, with surveyors offering highlights from their week here.

NSHA (all four Zones) will next be surveyed for accreditation purposes in October 2017. Because we are committed to quality and safety, everyone in our organization has an important role and responsibility to participate in accreditation.
