Spiritual Care

Our spiritual care staff are available 24 hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week, to provide spiritual and emotional support to patients, clients, their families and hospital staff. They can offer counsel on the meaning of suffering and provide assistance with the healing and recovery process regardless of cultural background or religious affiliation. They can also link you to Clergy, Denominational Chaplains and Lay Visitors from your own faith community. 

 Health care chaplains:

  • Are certified as Specialists in Spiritual Care by the Canadian Association of Spiritual Care (CASC).
  • Have graduate degrees: Master of Divinity, Master of Theology, or a master’s degree in a related discipline.
  • Provide spiritual and religious support on request to patients, veterans, clients and their families.
  • Facilitate the provision of sacraments and rituals requested by patients, veterans and clients.
  • Respond to requests for cultural and religious resources.
  • Counsel and support patients, veterans, clients and their families experiencing spiritual distress due to injury, prolonged illness, trauma, diagnosis, prognosis or loss of hope and meaning.
  • Provide end of life care.
  •  Are trained to offer counsel and support to those who are experiencing grief, loss or bereavement, either individually or in groups.
  • Supervise the training of spiritual care interns and residents through courses in clinical pastoral education (CPE).
