Orthopaedic Technologists

Orthopaedic technologists are qualified health care professionals who work under the direction of orthopaedic surgeons, but work in conjunction with other disiplines such:

  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Nurses

They specialize in duties such as:

  • Cast Application
  • Cast Adjustment
  • Cast Repair
  • Removal of casts
  • Splints
  • Braces
  • Functional cast bracing

They are also trained in the removal of:

  • Sutures
  • Staples
  • Pins
  • External fixators
  • Halo Braces

The Ortho Techs are also responsible for the application, maintenance and adjustments for many traction and bracing apparatus. This includes:

  • Balanced traction
  • Halo braces
  • Bucks traction
  • Slings, springs and other systems

Also they are knowledgeable in wound care treatments as it pertains to orthopaedic and fracture care. We participate in on going education as well as provide skill training sessions for clinical clerks, residents and other orthopaedic health care professionals.
