Community Mental Health Services

Community Mental Health (CMH) provides services for adults who are experiencing significant mental health problems or mental illness. We support people to manage mental health illness and improve their mental health and well-being. We work with community partners such as family physicians, schools, the Department of Community Services and other community agencies, as needed.

CMH consists of an interdisciplinary team that includes occupational therapists, social workers, registered nurses, psychologists and psychiatrists who work together to best meet your needs. This collaborative practice model is used to provide appropriate assessment and intervention. Based on your needs, you may be seen by any one or more of the interdisciplinary team members.

Some of the more common illnesses that we treat are:

  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Mood Disorders
  • Psychotic Disorders
  • Adjustment Disorders
  • Personality Disorders
  • Concurrent Disorders (both mental illness and addiction issues)

Referrals

It is preferred that people are referred to CMH by their family physician or other health care provider. If you have workplace or private insurance that covers counseling, access this first before requesting services at CMH. We do not accept referrals for custody/access, legal or insurance purposes.

CMH is not an urgent care service. If your situation is urgent, contact the Mental Health Mobile Crisis Team at 902-429-8167 or toll-free at 1-888-429-8167 or go to the nearest Emergency Department.

Once your referral is accepted, please call one of our five CMH clinics. This first appointment is called a Choice appointment. You may bring along a support person if you wish.

What to expect from your first appointment?

  • Your appointment will be between 60 to 90 minutes long; 
  • You will meet with 1 – 2 clinical staff members;
  • We will discuss your mental health concerns;
  • We will develop a joint understanding of your concerns; and
  • Together, we will decide what would be most helpful and we will develop a plan. This might include:
    • Referral to another service that would better meet your needs.
    • Strategies or activities that you and your support network can do on your own.
    • Individual therapy with a clinician who has the appropriate skills to assist you.
    • Group therapy offered by one of the five CMH clinics.
    • Further assessment so that we can better understand what may be contributing to your difficulties.
    • A review with a psychiatrist to discuss medication options and/or diagnostic clarification.

The Choice appointment may be all you need for now. If not, at the end of your appointment, any or all of the above options could be part of the recommended next steps.

A copy of the Choice Appointment Summary form will be sent to your family physician after your visit, and you may be asked if you would like a copy of the plan agreed upon during your appointment. You will also have the opportunity to provide feedback about the service you received by completing a survey which is located in the waiting areas at each clinic.

The support of family, friends and follow-up with your family physician is important. If you need CMH services after your treatment has ended, talk to you family physician about sending another referral.
