Addiction Prevention and Treatment Services launch new dedicated team for central intake.

APTS reassigned existing staff to create the new dedicated team of three, who will take calls that come in through their Central Information and Referral Phone line (902-424-8866 / toll free 1-866-340-6700).

An intake is the process by which an individual speaks to a qualified healthcare professional (a nurse and/or a counsellor) to share detailed information about his/her health, including a history of his/her involvement with alcohol, other drugs and/or gambling, in order to identify treatment needs. The intake represents that important first step toward treatment and recovery. Next steps may include attending community-based counselling and/or groups, participating in a day program or accessing inpatient beds. An intake is usually completed over the phone in 20 to 30 minutes.

The Central Intake service is not an emergency service. Individuals experiencing an emergency issue should call 911 or go to their nearest emergency department. If all three team members are currently on the phone helping other clients, the client is given the option to hold or to leave a confidential voice message so that the intake worker can call him or her back, usually within the same day.

Evening hours have been added to the service to enhance access for individuals who find it challenging to contact APTS during the workday. Hours of the new Central Intake Service are:

8:30am to 8:30pm

Tuesday - Friday
8:30am to 4:30pm

Individuals who are more comfortable completing an intake in person may also access “walk-in” intakes at the following community locations:

  • 1673 Bedford Row in downtown Halifax (one block west of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic)
  • 99 Wyse Road (10th floor) in Dartmouth (across from the Dartmouth Sportsplex)

Prior to creating the new dedicated team, APTS clinical staff rotated intake responsibilities or shared the responsibility with a small team. This created inconsistencies in accessibility, scheduling, response time and customer service. A number of client and partner surveys identified the need for intake staff with specialized skills who had a comprehensive knowledge of the many types of treatment options within APTS and the community.
