12 years of giving; 23 years receiving

When it comes to flu shots, Irene Yorke is both a giver and a recipient. “I have been getting the flu shot for 23 years, and I have been giving the shot for 12 to 14 years,” says Irene. “The patients that I deal with in the Hematology floor are high-risk patients. So I let each staff member and physicians know that I have the fluviral and they will come and get the immunization as they pass my office.”

Irene has never had an adverse reaction to the flu shot; neither has anyone to whom she’s given it. To people who are on the fence about receiving the flu immunization, Irene says, “It is not harmful, you are not only protecting yourself from getting sick but you are also protecting the patients around you who cannot get it themselves.”

“If you are still unsure if you should be receiving the flu vaccination, talk to your family doctor,” says Irene. “Everyone in my house has to get the flu shot.”
