Common Roots Urban Farm
Celebrating Health, Education and Agriculture
Capital Health will be using the property on the corner of Bell Rd. and Robie St. where Queen Elizabeth High School is currently located as an Urban Farm.
This property is earmarked for future hospital development. However, rather than leave it an empty lot, on an interim basis it will be used as a demonstration farm to celebrate community and promote good health, education and agriculture.
Phase One of the project included an open public forum at the Atlantica Hotel, Halifax in which Partners for Care of Capital Health and Dalhousie’s Cities and Environment Unit received positive support on the idea of an Urban Farm on the site. In December 2010 Partners for Care of Capital Health passed a motion to move forward with continuing plans for a demonstration urban farm on the site.
Phase Two of the Common Roots Urban Farm project is now complete. Many thanks to all who showed their support provided input into this part of the design process. A special thank you to Frank Palermo and his team at Dalhousie Cities and Environment who led the public consultations - they are the masters in their field!
The demolition process of the Queen Elizabeth High has begun. Stay tuned for developments on the Common Roots Urban Farm.
We welcome all from the community to come and share their knowledge, ideas and opinions.
