Enterprise Imaging

PACS captures, manages and stores medical images for patient care and is used by health care providers across the province to deliver patient care. In Nova Scotia, over 1.5M exams are performed on +1/2M patients each year.
PACS is comprised of two front-facing applications:
- IMPAX, which is used primarily in Diagnostic Imaging (DI), is being replaced with Enterprise Imaging
- XERO, a web-based viewer intended for use outside of DI, has been upgraded to XERO 8.1
These changes will happen in phases:
- Phase I (Completed January 2023):
- SHARE Clinical and Central Zone Clinical Portals - image link launches to new XERO
- Full provincial roll out of XERO
- Phase II (In Progress) – The replacement of IMPAX with Enterprise Imaging is has begun in the Western Zone in February 2023. This will be a rolling go-live which will take several months to complete.
Although much of the current functionality remains, these new platforms will offer enhanced features and updated appearance. For example, the new XERO provides enhanced viewing, collaboration and sharing on a single web viewer.
Enterprise Imaging will offer better clinical workflows & collaboration, including a new collaborator tool that replaces IMPAX Instant messaging, allowing for visual collaboration on the study.
This transition will modernize software and technology and provide a foundation for a provincial enterprise imaging strategy, including enabling the future storage of images from other clinical disciplines outside of the traditional areas of radiology and cardiology.
