A Capital Health team led by Dr. Angela Connors, a forensic and clinical psychologist, has won the inaugural Award of Excellence in Mental Health Quality Improvement for their work in effectively reducing sexual re-offending. The award, given by the Canadian College of Health Leaders, was recently presented in Banff, Alta. The team includes Jan Evans, Dr Michele St. Amand-Johnson, Sonja Svensson and Tarah Vallee.

Shauna Baker has joined the team of Administrative Coordinators/Patient Flow Managers. Shauna is a registered nurse and previously worked in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Denice Klavano, a patient representative has been named an honorary advisor to the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua) board. This is a global organization with a mission to inspire, promote and support continuous improvement in the safety and quality of health care worldwide.

Karen Mumford, Health Services Director for Perioperative/Ophthalmology and Tissue Bank has been named to the board of the Canadian College of Health Leaders. This is a national, member-driven, non-profit association dedicated to ensuring that the country’s health system benefits from capable, competent and effective leadership.

Dr. Gaynor Watson-Creed, medical officer of health, Capital Health has been named to the 15-member oneNS Coalition. The coalition is adopting the vision and goals of Now or Never: An Urgent Call to Action for Nova Scotians, (also known as the Ivany Report). The coalition will engage Nova Scotians in a broad-based action plan that will shift attitudes, tackle demographic challenges, and support business and economic growth.

Congratulations to Jennifer Sperry, nuclear medicine technologist in Diagnostic Imaging, for being awarded the Saroj Sharma Award for 2014. This award is chosen by the graduating class of the Nuclear Medicine Technology program at Dalhousie/QEII Bachelor of Health Sciences program. It is given to the technologist that provides the most outstanding patient care, is dedicated to student learning and is knowledgeable in the field of nuclear medicine technology.  The award recognizes the leadership skills of a nuclear medicine technologist in a teaching hospital. Saroj Sharma is a retired Nuclear Medicine technologist who worked here for 37 years and by sponsoring this award, she feels it will recognize the contribution technologists play in teaching the future generation of nuclear medicine technologists.

Carolyn Discher will be joining the Rehabilitation and Supportive Care Portfolio as the manager for the Halifax Infirmary Med/Surg Program for an eighteen month assignment. Her previous position was a Care Coordinator for the Home First Program in Continuing Care.

Christine Hopkins, a team member in Finance & eInformation Management is part of a group recently recognized with a 2014 Maritime Philanthropy Award for “Outstanding Volunteer Fundraising Group.”  Since 1997 her team has raised more than $260, 000 for Bosom Buddies and Pals Cancer Research.
