If you would like to make a difference in the health of your community, consider volunteering on the Halifax Peninsula Community Health Board.
Health is a lot more than just health care services. People create health in their everyday lives - where they live, work and play. The Halifax Peninsula Community Health Board is looking for new members, from all ages and walks of life, who are interested in creating healthier communities.
In the simplest terms, a Community Health Board is the eyes, ears and voice for the community’s health. Together with other groups, the Board supports many different community activities that aim to improve health. The communities we serve are the Northend, Downtown, Southend/Northwest Arm and Connaught/Quinpool areas of Halifax.
About Us
The Halifax Peninsula Community Health Board is made up of up to 15 community volunteers from Halifax Regional Municipality municipal districts 11, 12, 13 and 14 - Northend, Southend/Northwest Arm, Downtown and Connaught/Quinpool.
Nova Scotia is currently divided into nine District Health Authorities. One of these is Capital Health. District Health Authorities are governed by a Board of Directors, two-thirds of whom are nominated by Community Health Boards and one-third of whom are nominated by the Minister of Health.
Capital Health provides core health services to 395,000 residents, or 40 percent of the population of the Nova Scotia and employs over 8500 people. In addition to core health services such as hospitals, public health and mental health services , Capital Health also plays a significant role in medical research and specialty medical services for Atlantic Canada. The IWK Health Centre continues to operate under a separate Board of Directors, in close cooperation with Capital Health. All other hospital operations in the District are under the direction of Capital Health.
Capital Health is also committed to taking a lead role in health promotion and a Population Health approach to making our communities a better place to live, work and play.
A key element in this approach is the seven Community Health Boards that serve the residents of Capital Health. These Boards, made up of 15 community volunteers and legislated by the Health Authorities Act, work with the community to develop community health plans and local action strategies to improve health in the community. The Community Health Board also works closely with the Capital District Health Authority in district health planning.
In the simplest terms, a Community Health Board (CHB) is the eyes, ears and voice for the community’s health. The main task of the Board is to consult with residents and organizations about the various factors that affect health, and to advise Capital health on the initiatives necessary to meet the health needs of the community. It needs to be stressed that health is a lot more than just health care services. People create health in their everyday lives; where they live, work and play. Health is a shared responsibility that includes caring for yourself, your family and your community. Together with other groups, the Board supports many different community activities that aim to improve health.
