Every day, volunteers from all backgrounds work with the Capital Health team to help achieve the organization’s vision of becoming a world-leading haven for people-centred health, healing and learning.

More than 2,000 volunteers lend their unique talents through opportunities that are matched to their interests and skills.

A Wealth of Opportunities
The volunteer opportunities available at Capital Health are as varied as the volunteers themselves. There is a wide range of volunteer opportunities that enhance the patient and client experience in more than 300 programs and services, including: palliative care, long-term care, emergency departments, spiritual care, recreation therapy, mental health, physiotherapy, retail services, support areas and more.

The Flexibility to Fit With Your Life
We appreciate that each volunteer is unique in terms of when they’re able to volunteer and their preferred location. With a variety of programs and services (working directly with patients, clients and residents or in support areas) and a geographic reach from West Hants to Sheet Harbour, we invite you to explore volunteer opportunities that suit you. Our Volunteer Services team will work with you to find the right match.

The Support You Need
Volunteer Services, in collaboration with health care employees, strives to ensure volunteers have a rewarding, diverse and welcoming experience at Capital Health.

We will provide you with:

  • A choice of programs
  • Orientation and training
  • Staff support
  • References
  • Opportunities to give feedback
  • Parking
  • A smoke-free and scent-free environment

Becoming a Volunteer
Volunteers complete a screening process, which includes meeting with a volunteer coordinator, completing an application and providing references. Please call your preferred location to arrange an appointment.

A minimum commitment of one shift per week (approximately two to three hours) is required in most program areas for at least six months. Commitment may vary in specific programs. We hope you’ll join the Capital Health team as a volunteer!

As part of the reference process, all new volunteers who are 19 years of age and older will need to provide a valid Criminal Record Check, including the Vulnerable Sector Search, to Volunteer Services before starting any volunteer placement. For further information...
