Capital Health earns highest honour

Capital Health has earned the highest rating from Accreditation Canada – accredited with exemplary standing.

This honour recognizes Capital Health’s place as a leader in health care in Canada. In notifying the authority, Bernadette MacDonald, Accreditation Canada’s vice-president innovation and development, congratulated “leadership, staff, and accreditation team members for their efforts and dedication to the provision of safe, quality health services.”

The accreditation standing was based on a week-long survey of Capital Health in October 2013, as well as evidence Capital Health submitted to Accreditation Canada up to the end of March.

Dr. Daniel O’Brien, chair of Capital Health’s board of directors, said the accreditation standing is a hallmark of outstanding commitment to patients.

“While Accreditation Canada’s decision is based on six days of surveys and a close look at our organization’s practices, we know that every day, every year, our physicians, staff and leadership work hard to ensure the best care possible,” said O’Brien. “To see our success recognized by an external body is rewarding.”

Chris Power, president and CEO of Capital Health, said staff and physicians deserve the recognition, especially when one considers the challenges all health care providers face.

“Our people work to provide excellent care despite limited resources and increased numbers of patients. Patients are sicker, and chronic diseases are more common,” she said. “We have challenges, and we are very fortunate to have this set of dedicated staff and physicians who rise and overcome these challenges.”

Power said that while Capital Health has earned the highest rating, the organization’s commitment to quality and safety does not stop here.

“Accreditation is an important part of our quality process, but the work doesn’t end here. Our quality teams, our health care providers, our leadership and our physicians and staff all continue to find new and better ways to deliver the best care.”

Accreditation Canada is a not-for-profit, independent organization that visits health care facilities every three years to validate the quality of work being done. The surveyors visited about 20 Capital Health sites to evaluate both clinical and administrative services against 36 sets of standards of care.
