Financial Responsibility

Financial Responsibility for Prostheses and Equipment
The cost of prostheses may be covered by one of the following:

  • The Government of Nova Scotia through the MSI program (if you are a resident of NS)
  • The Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB)
  • The Department of Veterans Affairs (VAC)
  • First Nations & Inuit Health
  • Insurance Companies

MSI may cover the cost of:

  • Initial or Replacement prostheses
  • Any repairs or replacement of worn parts
  • Major changes to prostheses
  • New sockets
  • Requests not approved for funding can be appealed through the MSI Program -
  • Medavie Blue Cross

The following items are NOT covered by MSI and are the responsibility of the individual.  If you have private medical insurance, you will need to check with your insurance company to determine if these items are covered.

  • Orthopedic footwear, insoles, braces
  • Ambulatory aids, i.e., walkers, canes
  • Adaptive aids, i.e., bath bench, raised toilet seat, grab bars
  • Wheelchairs
  • Upper limb myoelectric prostheses
  • Custom made cosmetic restorations for prostheses
  • External powered, microprocessor components for prostheses
  • Stump socks
