Who We Are

The Nova Scotia Health Trauma Program (Trauma Nova Scotia) is a provincial trauma program operated and managed under Nova Scotia Health

Trauma Nova Scotia was launched in 1997 by Emergency Health Services (EHS) under the strategic direction of the NS Department of Health and Wellness as the Nova Scotia Trauma Program with a mandate to facilitate the provision of optimal trauma care through leadership in injury prevention and control, education, research, and the continuous development and improvement of the provincial trauma system. In 2019, the trauma program joined Nova Scotia Health and continued providing essential functions including leadership, education, research, injury prevention, emergency preparedness, and management of the provincial trauma registry. 

Trauma NS is a nationally recognized leader in integrated trauma care, incorporating patient-centred clinical excellence, innovative education, practice-changing research, and reflective health care policy.

What We Do

Leadership

Trauma Nova Scotia leads the development, coordination, management, and surveillance of the provincial trauma system. 

Trauma Registry

The Nova Scotia Trauma Registry (NSTR) is a population-based registry capturing detailed information on all major trauma patients in Nova Scotia.  

Education

Educational opportunities include the Advanced Trauma Life Support course, the Provincial Trauma Course, simulation training, inter-professional clinical trauma rounds and webinars.

Research

We investigate a wide range of topics related to trauma care in collaboration with clinicians, residents, fellows, medical students, and other researchers from Nova Scotia and across Canada.

Quality Assurance

Trauma NS routinely conducts quality assurance to optimize the performance of our provincial trauma system and to ensure the accuracy of data being collected in the Nova Scotia Trauma Registry. 

Injury Prevention

Major traumatic injuries can lead to disability or death and can affect us all. However, many injuries can be prevented or avoided with a few safety precautions. 

Mass Casualty Program

The Mass Casualty Program  activities comprise many components and include a complex cycle of planning, education, training, exercises, and improvement.

QEII Trauma Consult Service

A unique service was launched at the QEII in Halifax in 2022. The Trauma Consult (TC) Service includes physicians and nurses dedicated to optimizing the care of major trauma patients during their admission to the QEII and following hospital discharge.
